Section 11: Tropical & Highlands Climate

1. Summarize the two sections found on pages 697-698.
2. Answer the following questions: How and why do areas near the equator stay cool? What factors affect the temperature?

  1. In the tropical rainforest climate rains are very heavy. The rains support the growth of rainforests. Rainforests are home to a huge variety of plants and animals. Thailand has lost nearly half of its rainforests. It has lost it less than 40 years. A landslide is a situation in which soil is washed down the hills.

The area around the equator stays cool by the sea’s breeze. The sea’s breeze makes the coastal climate more moderate. Even Singapore which is almost on the equator stays cool. Singapore has never had a temperature above 97 degrees F. The breeze is a big factor in Southeast Asia

  2. Many parts of Southeast Asia is in Tropical Climates. In this part of the region, in the summer, the rays of the sun are a direct hit over Southeastern Asia and in the winter warm winds sweep over this area from the Equator. Rains in the region can be very heavy and in some parts, like Indonesia, which can get up to 120 Inches per year. Areas of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of Southwestern China have Highland Climates. Temperatures are cold in these areas, especially the mountain ranges like the Himalaya’s.

The reason some places have cold temperatures is because, like Singapore, sea breezes pass over the coasts of Asia which help maintain the temperatures in those areas. In some mountain ranges like New Guinea and Moake have very cold temperatures and are covered with snow, because of these sea breezes. Another reason these mountain ranges have snow is because their altitudes that they are in. The higher the mountains are, the more colder the temperature gets. A factor of this effect is the equator has the most and direct sunlight in any other area in the world.
