Section 8: Effects on Climate

1. Summarize the section found on page 695.
2. Answer the following question: What problems are created by uneven rainfall throughout the year? What are some solutions?

  1. 1.The climate for this area is shaped by three different air masses. They bring in cold and warm air. The average temperature of Mongolia in January is about -15 degrees. In some parts of Asia there are yearly monsoons that bring in about 8o% of the years rainfall. Japan gets warm monsoons in the middle of winter. The warm waters in the tropics help create Typhoons.

2.Some problems that are created are probably flooding. A solution for this is to build they houses on stilts like India, because they know when it’s coming. Another problem is them using valuable farmland, from too much water. I don’t know what a good solution for these, but maybe they can plant in green house or something. Water is probably this regions greatest advantage and disability.

  3. 1. The average temperature in Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, is -15 degrees F or -26C (that’s cold). In northern China, monsoon winds, like ones in south Asia, are common. In East Asia the summer monsoons can bring 80 percent or more of their yearly rainfall. Little rainfalls in the winter.
    2. If there is no rain in the winter, then things will die of lack of water. If things die that’s not good, because we want things to live. If there is too much rain in the summer, then things will drowned and die. If things die that’s not good, because we want things to live. A solution to this is: when its summer get a big, big water tower to put all the rain in, and when its winter then you take the water out.

  4. The climates are based on three air masses. The first is cold dry air from the Arctic, second is cool dry air from the west, and third is warm moist air from the Pacific. In winter cold Arctic winds sweep across Siberia and lower temps in Mongolia and northern China. Ocean currents affect climate, especially on islands. Warm-water current flows north along southeastern Japan which brings moisture to winter monsoons.

It is hard to get the perfect amount of rainfall in a year. You have to be very lucky. Many times you get an uneven amount of rainfall. This can cause many problems. One of the problems this can cause is having floods. Another problem it can cause is not having enough water. The solution to this is very hard to come up with. I do not know any solutions to the problem. This is probably the worst problem in the region.

  5. The climates of East Asia and Southeast Asia are shaped by three different air masses. One passes cold, dry air from the Arctic region. The second brings cool, dry air from the west eastward across Asia. The third carries warm, moist air from the Pacific Ocean. These winds, along with the region’s landforms, form the climates of East Asia and Southeast Asia. The cold Siberian winds don’t reach the enormous parts of the region that lie below northern china. Little rain falls on the Asian continent in the winter. Areas of Southeast Asia that are closest to the equator have warm temperatures all year round.

The problems are that if little rain falls the crops will not grow. If the crops will not grow they will not get food. Another problem is water to drink or bathe in and they will stink. You could solve the problem, if you won’t move out of the area, maybe to filter the ocean water since the earth is three fourths water. You could also ship water to the area for all the people who inhabit there.

  6. The climates in Southeast Asia can be affected in many ways. Southeastern Asia has three different air masses coming from three different areas that cause climate changes. The seasonal winds, called monsoons, also have an impact on the climate. Monsoons have such a big effect, sometimes they can cause up to 80 percent of the areas yearly rainfall. Ocean currents and Typhoons also have effects on Asia’s climate.
There could be many problems created by uneven rainfall. One of the big reasons that I always think of is flooding. Flooding is a devastating problem that can often lead to a lot of problems, including leaving a lot of people homeless. A good way to prevent homeless people would be to build houses on stilts, like they do in India. Another damage that it can do is, the farmers crops could be ruined therefore, the peoples diets would have to change because there is a food shortage.
