Section 1: Landforms of East Asia

1. Summarize the main ideas of this section found on page 689.
2. Answer the following question: East Asia is made up of highlands and lowlands. Why do you think most people live in the lowland areas?

  1. East Asia is composed of many landforms including mountain ranges, such as the Himalaya and the Kunlun Shan. There is also one plateau called the Plateau of Tibet, which is so high, they call it the Roof of the World. Plains are also in East Asia, like the North China Plain and the Manchurian Plain. There are also islands like Japan, and the Philippines which form an archipelago. Most islands in East Asia are in the Ring of Fire which sees very much volcanic and earthquake action.

I think that most people live in lowlands because of food, and weather. When you’re up in high elevations, you cannot really farm very well. Also, the weather is a lot nicer farther down. On a high plateau, you would get snow most of the year. Whereas in a low place, you will get more heat and sun.

  2. 1.A lot of the countries in this region are located on peninsulas or islands. Mountains cut through the west eastern part of Asia. The Plateau of Tibet is located in between these mountains. The North China plain is the lowest point in East Asia. Japan forms an archipelago, or chain of islands. China was formed by an underwater volcano. East Asia is located in the Ring of Fire that causes many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

2.Most people live in the lowlands because it is easier to travel. If you were to live in the highlands it would be harder to get to. On the lowlands everything is right where you are and you don’t have to go great distances to get it. If you live in the highlands it would be harder to get what you need when you need it. It would be a lot better to live in the lowlands because they are generally flat and easy to build on and farm there.

  3. China and Mongolia are the largest countries in East Asia. The most common landforms in East Asia are peninsulas and islands. Mountain ranges are common with the largest ones including the Himalayas and Kunlun Shan. Between those mountains is the plateau of Tibet or the “Roof of the World.” Most of East Asia’s population lives on the fertile lowlands of the region. An archipelago, or a chain of islands, is formed because of Japan and Taiwan. East Asia’s islands are part of the Ring of Fire that borders the
    Pacific Ocean.

I think that most people live in lowland areas because they are more fertile. I think another reason is because of transportation. If you live on highlands you would have a very hard time getting all the supplies you would need from one place to another. Also it is colder in higher altitudes along with more rain and snow. Although, living on highlands would be fun, there would be many negative impacts on you.

  4. East Asia holds much of the landforms.
Mountains and highland go through East Asia. The tallest of them all are the Himalays and Kunlun Shan. Between these two mountains is the Plateau of Tibet.

    2. I think it is becuase of the temp ,fertile lands, and rives. also becuase of the Ring of Fire.

  5. East Asia occupies much of the Asian continent. The tallest mountain ranges include the Himalaya and the Kunlun Shan. The Plateau of Tibet is 15,000 ft. in elevation, being so high it is called the “Roof of the World”. East of the mountains are East Asia’s only major lowland areas, the North China Plain and the Manchurian Plain. In the Pacific Ocean off East Asia’s coast lies an arc of mountainous islands. These islands include Japan, which forms and chain of islands, and Taiwan. off the coast of southwestern China.

I think most people would live in the lowlands because it is warmer. They might live lower because of the richer land. They also might live down there because of the water. If they live in the highland they might not be able to breath as easy. Also there might not be as much feeding ground for their livestock.

  6. 1. The Plateau of Tibet is so high that it’s called the Root of the World. It averages 15,000 feet in elevation. An archipelago is a chain of mountains. These mountains include Japan and Taiwan off the coast of southeastern China. East Asia’s islands are part of the Ring of Fire.
    2. People live in lowlands because it’s hard to build a house on slopes. You can’t fall off lowlands, it’s just no t possible, but you can fall off a mountain, and that might hurt. Some people might not like highlands because they might be frightened of heights (like my little sister). Some people can’t stand high altitudes because of the lack of oxygen (they most likely will suffocate if they don’t get enough air, and that’s not good). It’s hard to grow plants on a mountain and if they don’t grow enough food they will die of starvation.

  7. Mongolia and China stretch across most of East Asia’s landmass. Some of East Asia’s countries such as North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan lie on islands or peninsulas. The tallest mountain ranges are the Himalayas and the Kunlun Shan. Through these mountains lies the spacious Plateau of Tibet. East of these mountains lies East Asia’s only lowlands: the North China Plain and the Manchurian Plain. Japan is an arc or a curve of islands with mountains along East Asia’s coast. This forms a chain of islands.

I think people live in the lowland areas because altitudes aren’t very high. This would be easier to farm animals. In addition to this you could herd these animals as well. Being able to farm will result into more food. Weather would also be warmer. Unlike the mountains with their snowy peaks.

  8. This section talks about mountins, the plains, and archipelago. the hiest mountin in this section is a platue called the platue of tebet nicknamed the roost of the worald. Than the plainsin this section are th manchurian and the China plain. These are the loest places in thes region. Then in the pacific ocean there are two archipelago(chain of islands), one is tiwan and the other is japan.
That is what this section is about.

People live in low land areas because of the rich soil. That makes the crops grow higher.
Another reason people live in low land areas is because of the air presere on peoples lungs that dosen't give people alot of oxygen. With more water flowing down the mountins. That is why people live i low land areas.

  9. 1. I think that more people live in the lowlands because of the temperature is much warmer in lower lands and there is more oxygen lower in the atmosphere.
    2. Most of the landmass is covered by China and Mongolia. Most of East Asia’s countries are in a peninsula or islands. The islands are North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The Himalayas and the Kunlun Shan are the tallest mountains in East Asia. They are between the plateau of Tibet. The Plateau of Tibet is so high up that it is called the roof of the world. Japan is a part of an archipelago or a chain of islands.

  10. Landforms of East Asia

    1. China and Mongolia take up most of East Asia. High lands and mountains slice through western East Asia. East of the mountains are the major lowland areas. A curve of islands including Japan, form an archipelago, or a chain of islands. Taiwan was forms millions of years ago by volcanoes. This is called the ring of fire.

    2. Most people like to live on lowlands because it is mostly plains, and that’s were u grow food. You can’t get water on mountains very easily mountains and highlands. You can’t fall off something that is low like a low land but u can fall off highlands. Most of the population low land so if you like to talk a lot I wouldn’t suggest living somewhere were there isn’t very many people (highlands). And also if you don’t want your kids walking off the highlands I wouldn’t live there. So that is problly why most people don’t live on the highlands.

  11. The Plateau of Tibet is known as the “Roof of the World.” It towers over the world with an outstanding elevation average of 15,000 feet. It also talks about the archipelago, which are a chain of islands, like Japan. Islands are formed by underground sea volcanic activity. East Asia has islands that are part of the Ring of Fire.

I think most people live in lowland areas because, if people are living in the highlands, also called the “Roof of the World,” they could fall off and go SPLAT!!! Another reason is that if you are in the highlands, which are averaging in about 15,000 feet, you can’t walk down it. You would need a sled or an elevator (which they don’t have). The final reason is that nobody wants to live on a mountain. It would be too cold and you can’t survive it, (no matter how tough you are).

  12. East Asia covers much of the continent, Asia. China and Mongolia cover much of land mass. North and South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan are all part of East Asia. Highlands and mountain ranges cross through the western part of East Asia and East of these mountains are East Asia’s most major lowlands: North China Plain and Manchurian Plain. Off of East Asia’s coast, in the Pacific Ocean, is the arc of mountainous islands.

There can be many different reasons why most people in the region live on the lowlands. If a village is on lowland and highlands are surrounding the lowland, invaders can have a harder and longer time getting to the lowlands because they have to get over the highlands first. Another reason is maybe there is more vegetation on the lowlands then the highlands. Also a reason why people might live on the lowlands instead of the highlands is because of the temperature. Highlands tend to be much cooler then the lowlands.

  13. China and Mongolia take a lot of this land mass up. The other countries are North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan that lie on peninsulas or islands. The tallest mountain range here is the Himalayans. The plateau of Tibet is called the roof of the world because it is so tall. The island of Japan makes an archipelago which is called a chain of islands. The East Asia’s islands are part of the ring of fire.
I think most people live in the lowlands because. There is not as much elevation and they won’t have problems with oxygen. If it snows there I’m not sure if it does but then they would be taking the chance of avalanches. And it would be easier access to the big buildings and markets. If I lived there I would want to live in the lowlands.
